Three Typhoons Converge on Japan as Holiday Weekend Begins with High-Wave Warnings

Japan entered the first day of its Sports Day three-day weekend on October 10 with three typhoons active in the Pacific at the same time, their effects expected to concentrate between October 10 and 12. Typhoon Koguma, the season's 29th, formed on October 5 east of Guam, joining Typhoon Choi-wan, the 27th, and Typhoon Nolo, the 28th, in a rare triple-typhoon situation, according to the Seoul Economic Daily and other regional media.
Koguma was forecast to strengthen moving northwest and approach waters near Minamitorishima, Japan's easternmost island. Choi-wan, rated very strong, was moving north along waters near the Ogasawara Islands with maximum winds of 50 metres per second, while Nolo was also expected to reach waters east of Japan around October 10.
The Japan Meteorological Agency cautioned that strong winds and high waves warranted vigilance from northern Japan, including Hokkaido, to western Japan. The Kanto region, including Tokyo, faced the prospect of high waves and swells despite no forecast of a direct landfall.
For Chinese families in Japan with holiday travel plans, the practical steps are to confirm ferry and flight status, keep away from breakwaters and river mouths, and be ready to cancel island and coastal trips if conditions deteriorate.
