Newport Beach Declares Local Emergency as Coastal Flooding Inundates Balboa Peninsula

Saturday, October 10, 2026 · California · GSM News

Newport Beach has declared a local emergency after high surf and elevated tides from Tropical Storm Rachel flooded streets on the Balboa Peninsula on Friday. City officials said the declaration helps bring in additional resources while crews rebuild beach berms, operate pumps and open tide valves to reduce flooding.

A National Weather Service coastal flood warning for Orange County beaches remains in effect through 3 p.m. Sunday. Forecasters say Sunday morning could bring the most dangerous combination of south swells, strong onshore winds and tides above 7 feet, with possible flooding of low-lying roads, beach parking lots and boardwalks, plus temporary street closures and parking restrictions.

Residents and visitors should not walk or drive through standing water and should use extreme caution near the ocean. People in waterfront or flood-prone neighborhoods can protect property with sandbags or temporary barriers. The city is providing free prefilled sandbags at its Municipal Operations yard on Superior Avenue, with empty bags available at fire stations and from lifeguards on the Balboa Peninsula. Residents should monitor official city updates and register for alerts at NBPD.org.
