At least 109 migrants, including 15 children, have died and more than 116 are missing after a boat carrying about 350 people capsized while sailing from Djibouti to Yemen, the International Organization for Migration said on Sunday, Reuters reported. The vessel overturned near Guhere, north of the port town of Obock, during the night of October 8–9, according to survivor accounts.

The IOM said the recovered bodies comprised 52 men, 42 women and 15 children — nine girls and six boys. More than 80 people survived, all Ethiopian nationals, and 64 survivors are being assisted at the IOM's Migrant Response Centre in Obock while Djiboutian authorities continue search and recovery operations.

The passengers were attempting to cross the Bab el-Mandeb Strait to Yemen, hoping ultimately to reach Gulf states for work. The IOM has recorded more than 20,000 crossings into Djibouti from Ethiopia since September 10, and more than 900 migrants died or went missing on the sea route to Yemen last year alone.
