City Council Approves Gritz Cafe Expansion Into $8.7M Good Word Market Hall on Historic Westside

Las Vegas is a city in Clark County, Nevada. The Las Vegas City Council on Oct. 7 approved a lease bringing longtime Historic Westside favorite Gritz Cafe into the $8.7 million Good Word Market Hall, where the restaurant plans to open Gritz Cafe Express in 2027.
The agreement between the city's redevelopment agency and the restaurant covers stall No. 2 inside the new venue, following earlier approvals this year for two other businesses.
It's the first expansion in 18 years for Gritz Cafe. Founder Trina Jiles — the first Black woman to serve as a firefighter in Clark County — opened the Southern breakfast-and-lunch spot on Stella Lake Street in January 2008, building a loyal following for creamy grits, fried catfish and chicken and waffles.
The Good Word, rising at 1122 D St., is described as the first gathering space of its kind in the Historic Westside: roughly 9,000 square feet of interior space, a 2,400-square-foot mezzanine, dining and live entertainment, with stalls designed to help small businesses get their footing. The project carries $8.7 million in funding through the city's redevelopment agency.
