Newport Beach Continues Coastal Flood Protection: Three Piers Closed, Free Sandbags at Three Locations

Sunday, October 11, 2026 · California · GSM News

[GSM Orange County, Oct. 11] The City of Newport Beach continued its coastal flood protection efforts on Oct. 11 as high surf combined with elevated tides from the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel kept threatening the Balboa Peninsula. The city announced that Newport Pier, Balboa Pier and the Wedge remain closed until further notice.

According to an official city email, lifeguards urged the public to stay out of the ocean and not to climb on protective sand berms, warning that doing so can compromise the berms' structural integrity and reduce their effectiveness in protecting homes and infrastructure. The National Weather Service had issued a coastal flood warning for Orange County beaches, warning of potentially significant flooding and beach erosion, with tides expected to exceed 7 feet during Sunday morning's high tide.

To help residents prepare, the city is offering free sandbags at three locations: the Corporation Yard (592 Superior Ave), Marina Park, and Temporary Fire Station No. 1. Empty sandbags are available at Lifeguard Headquarters (70 Newport Pier).

Background: City Manager Seimone Jurjis declared a local emergency on Friday, Oct. 9, after seawater inundated streets on the Balboa Peninsula. According to media reports, city crews worked through the weekend reinforcing sand berms, and public information manager Georgia Rios said at midday Sunday that the berms were holding strong. Forecasters expect minor to moderate coastal flooding concerns to continue during high tides over the next few days, urging motorists not to drive through flooded roads or around barricades.
