Pakistan's President Imposes Emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Suspending Imran Khan's Party Government

Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday declared a state of emergency in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and suspended the provincial government led by jailed former prime minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, Reuters reported. The president's office said the move, taken on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's advice after a federal cabinet decision, followed allegations that the provincial government had failed to tackle Islamist militancy.

Under the constitution, the federal government may take over some or all provincial functions during an emergency. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said the provincial governor would run the province with an advisory council, initially for six months, and the interior ministry said troops would be deployed.

The border province has seen a rising number of militant attacks in recent months; the federal government and military accuse PTI of failing to curb the militants, while PTI says Islamabad denied it the funding and equipment needed. The decision came as PTI rallied for days to press for Khan's release and threatened to march on Islamabad.
