Sailboat Runs Aground and Takes On Water Near Coronado; Coast Guard Breaks Through Cabin to Rescue Trapped Man

Sunday, October 11, 2026 · California · GSM News

Coronado is a city in San Diego County, California. The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a man trapped aboard a sailboat near Coronado on October 11. The man called 911 at around 4 a.m. reporting that his sailboat had run aground and was filling with water. A Coast Guard Station San Diego crew located the vessel but could not reach it in dangerously shallow water and rough conditions, so an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Ventura was dispatched. Rescue swimmer Mike Antoon was lowered onto the sailboat, found the man struggling to breathe in a partially flooded cabin, handed him a snorkel, and then tore open part of the cabin roof to pull him out. The helicopter took the man to Coast Guard Sector San Diego at about 7:25 a.m., where medical personnel were waiting.
