Trump Announces Russia-Ukraine “Energy Ceasefire” Effective Immediately; Russia Yet to Confirm, Ukraine Says It Will Comply If Russia Does

U.S. President Donald Trump announced Sunday morning that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to an "energy ceasefire." According to CNN's breaking report on October 11, Trump wrote on social media Sunday morning: "Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!"
The details and veracity of the agreement remain to be confirmed. CNN said it has reached out to the White House about how the agreement was reached and what comes next; as of publication, there was no response from Russia. A source close to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told CNN the announcement was news to them as well, but that "they will agree if Russia does."
The announcement came suddenly but not without buildup. CNN reports that Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday and then announced a controversial deal to supply markets with Russian diesel; meanwhile, senior U.S. and Ukrainian officials, including Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff, were holding talks in Miami. Zelensky publicly criticized the diesel deal, and Trump said Saturday that Ukraine "should get a new leader who can make a deal."
In an ABC News interview on Sunday, Zelensky struck an open tone on the energy ceasefire: "OK, if they want energy ceasefire, we are open for this," he said. "Don't attack us. Don't kill our children. We will stop attack your diesel. And I think it's fair, fair deal."
Reuters' podcast the same day also listed "Trump calls for replacing Ukraine's Zelenskiy in tussle over diesel deal" among its global headlines. Energy infrastructure has been a prime target for both sides throughout the more than three years of the Russia-Ukraine war; if the ceasefire holds, it would mark a significant de-escalation — but until Moscow weighs in, whether the deal materializes remains unknown.
