Trump Renews Bid to Remove Fed Governor Lisa Cook; White House Hearing Set for Nov. 5

U.S. President Donald Trump is renewing his effort to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook. According to a notice posted on the White House website on October 9, 2026, Trump has formed a three-member investigative committee and ordered a closed-door hearing at the White House on November 5 to examine mortgage fraud allegations against Cook.
Under a presidential memorandum dated October 7, Cook must attend the closed hearing of no more than four hours. She may bring counsel and present evidence. Cook will have until November 10 to submit a final written response.
The dispute began in August 2025, when Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte accused Cook of listing properties in Michigan and Georgia as primary residences on 2021 mortgage documents. Trump first attempted to fire Cook last August; she sued, and the Supreme Court ruled in June that he cannot remove her while the legal issues are sorted out.
Cook's lawyers said on October 9 that if the hearing is objective, the conclusion will be that she did not commit mortgage fraud. Notably, the November 5 hearing falls two days after elections. Meanwhile, minutes of the Fed's September meeting showed most policymakers saw another rate hike as likely appropriate by year end. (Sources: White House, Dow Jones, Reuters)
