Follow-up: Long Beach Continues Storm Recovery — 13 Addresses Still Red-Tagged, Evacuations Through Tuesday

Long Beach officials continued recovery work Monday from Tropical Storm Rachel's remnants. Mayor Rex Richardson announced Saturday evening that eight structures across 13 addresses were red-tagged (unsafe to occupy) and one was yellow-tagged (owners may retrieve belongings but not occupy). Mandatory evacuation orders remained in effect Sunday evening for the 6400 and 6500 blocks of Seaside Walk; evacuation warnings continued for homes on 64th, 65th and 66th Places and the 6200, 6300, 6600 and 6700 blocks of Seaside Walk. Broader evacuation advisories were lifted at 6:15 p.m. Sunday. Crews are using construction cranes to place sandbags weighing more than 3,000 pounds to shore up the seawall; the city has distributed 10,000 sandbags to residents. City Manager Tom Modica said crews have moved 45,000 cubic yards of sand to add 200 feet of width to the battered beach, with another 50,000 to 100,000 cubic yards expected the week of Oct. 19. The National Weather Service kept a coastal flood advisory in effect until 2 p.m. Tuesday for Los Angeles County beaches. (This is a follow-up to our Oct. 10 report on the red tags and evacuations.)
