Swiftwater Crews Rescue Two Women, Four Dogs from Santa Ana River; Two More Saved Off Fairfax Drive

San Bernardino County Fire swiftwater rescue teams made two rescues on Sunday, Oct. 11, amid Tropical Storm Rachel's aftermath. At 11:58 a.m., crews responded to the Santa Ana River near E Street in San Bernardino, where two women and their four dogs were marooned on an island after the river rose and turned their encampment into an island. An inflatable rescue boat reached the group; the women were fitted with life jackets and the small dogs were carried ashore in a mesh bag. No injuries were reported. Earlier, at 8:40 a.m., crews rescued two people trapped in rising flood waters on Fairfax Drive: firefighters found two victims in a tunnel feeding the main flood control channel and used a ladder truck to remove them one at a time after ruling out helicopter extraction because power lines crossed the channel at narrow intervals.
