San Diego Unified Issues Teacher Guide After Trump Iran Remark Alarms Students

Monday, October 12, 2026 · California · GSM News

San Diego Unified School District has published a nine-page resource for educators on how to talk with students about President Donald Trump's remark that Iran could bomb San Diego, which alarmed students this week. At a rally in Nebraska on Oct. 5, while discussing the war with Iran, Trump said: "Let them take out Los Angeles; let them take out San Diego. That's — this is a very small price to pay, and it's going to be over with very soon." The Trump administration said the comments were widely misinterpreted and that the president meant cities would have been in danger had he not acted. The district's guide advises teachers to emphasize students' safety; for younger students, to ask what makes them feel safe; and for older students, to discuss media literacy and civics. The guide also includes the administration's defense of the remarks. District Superintendent Fabi Bagula and other education leaders held a press conference denouncing the words; Bagula said, "No child should ever be asked to answer for a government or be treated as responsible for its actions." The district has publicly released the nine-page guidance document.
