China's Political-Legal Commission Orders Stricter Crackdown on Food-Safety Crimes, Targeting Meat Products and School Food

Monday, October 12, 2026 · World News · GSM News

China's Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission has issued an opinion calling for stricter handling of food-safety crimes, CCTV News reported on October 12. The document sets three requirements for political-legal organs: focus enforcement on areas of high public concern — meat products, school food, health foods, vegetables and fruit — and on links including processing, online sales, catering and imports; apply strict standards across investigation, arrest, prosecution, trial and sentence enforcement, strictly limiting suspended sentences and exemptions from criminal punishment and imposing heavier penalties in serious cases; and strengthen supervision of major or complex cases through individual-case oversight and guidance cases. It also calls for better coordination with market-regulation and agriculture departments, clearer rules for transferring cases between administrative enforcement and criminal justice, and a shared information platform to prevent fines from substituting for criminal liability.
