ICE Vehicle Strikes Pedestrian During Houston Pursuit; Harris County Investigates as Commissioner Demands Video Release

HOUSTON — Houston is a city in Harris County, Texas. Harris County sheriff's deputies are investigating after a vehicle operated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents struck a man in the Houston area on Saturday morning during a pursuit, authorities said.
The incident happened around 7:20 a.m. on Clay Road, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office. ICE agents were conducting a targeted operation to arrest Jose Mendoza-Cervantes, described by the agency as a Mexican national with a final order of removal, when the suspect drove the wrong way and then abandoned the vehicle with a passenger, fleeing on foot.
As agents tried to box in the fleeing passenger near a building, the passenger was struck. ICE identified the injured man as Miguel Parra-Hernandez, a 48-year-old Mexican national and a passenger in the suspect's vehicle. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries, is in stable condition, and is believed to have a broken leg. He was taken to a hospital and remains in ICE custody. ICE said Parra-Hernandez ran in front of the enforcement vehicle and that officers immediately called emergency medical services and rendered aid.
ICE said Mendoza-Cervantes has four prior arrests for driving under the influence and one for unlawful possession of a firearm, had been removed from the United States twice, and had illegally reentered the country five times. He remained at large as of Saturday, and the agency asked anyone with information to come forward.
Harris County Commissioner Lesley Briones said she was horrified by the incident and called on ICE to cooperate fully with investigators and release all video evidence. "ICE must cooperate fully with the Harris County Sheriff's Office and release all video evidence of this incident," Briones said in a statement. "We demand full transparency, accountability, and respect for the rule of law." The sheriff's office said investigators are trying to obtain footage from a nearby building's camera.
According to USA Today, which first reported the incident.
