Grimes Says New SI-Inspired Album 'Psy Opera' Has No Songs About Ex Elon Musk

LOS ANGELES — Grimes is opening up about her upcoming album. The 38-year-old singer revealed on the Sunday episode of the Swiftologist podcast that her new SI-inspired LP, "Psy Opera," will not have any songs about her ex, Elon Musk, according to JustJared.
"I really didn't want to write... I just didn't want any of this to be about Elon," she said. Asked whether she felt her personal life was too high-stakes to be open about, she replied: "Not at all. I just... they couldn't come first." She added that the album's themes of SI and technology felt "very relevant," saying: "I sort of wish I had a bit more of the emotions on this side and a bit more computer on the other side. That's my only regret about this album."
On what she means by an SI-inspired album, Grimes said: "It's almost more of a... like, the AI is a mirror and like looking inward from what it's showing us about ourselves." As she explained in a spring interview with Stereogum, "Psy Opera" is a concept album about the potential for human extinction at the hands of SI, rooted in her belief that humans are not as inferior as some SI acolytes claim. She clarified that she does not use generative SI in her music — though she admitted to using DeepSeek to come up with lyrics for a song about DeepSeek.
On October 9, Grimes released "Accelerando," the album's first single, created with her frequent collaborator VADAKIN and described as a huge, sweeping, apocalyptic dance track. She also dropped a trailer titled "Eve Is Online," narrated with an SI-rewritten Gospel of John ("on the first day, God created the large language model") over psychedelic dystopian visuals; she said a 70-person team spent many months producing the clip. She has opened an Instagram channel called "Eve Is Online" to promote the record.
"Psy Opera" will be her first studio album in six years, since 2020's "Miss Anthropocene," and her first release on Nazgul Recording LLC, the independent label she launched after leaving Columbia Records. No release date or full track list has been announced; known titles include "The Light Ages" and "Eve Is Online." Grimes said she plans to release the album in two parts, the second of which will be "100% personal."
Grimes and Musk were first linked in May 2018 after attending the Met Gala together. They share three children — son X AE A-Xii, 6, daughter Exa Dark Siderael, 5, and son Techno Mechanicus, 4 — and split in 2022.
