Follow-Up: Phoenix Symphony Board and Musicians Hold Constructive Talks, Performances Could Resume This Month

The Phoenix Symphony in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona, saw a turn on November 2, as representatives of its board of directors and staff met with American Federation of Musicians Local 586 to discuss the orchestra's future.
According to The Arizona Republic, a joint statement called the meeting "a respectful, constructive conversation," with all participants encouraged by the progress made toward their shared goal of returning the orchestra to the stage. The main items discussed included meaningful fundraising progress over the past week and a plan to resume performances, possibly as soon as this month; the musicians, board and staff also agreed to collaborate on fundraising to support the symphony.
A day earlier, on November 1, the orchestra's 66 musicians played what was billed as their final concert before the season's suspension at Symphony Hall, closing with Elgar's "Nimrod" from the Enigma Variations. The board had announced the suspension of the 2026-27 season on October 20 for lack of funds; the musicians' unpaid layoffs took effect November 2, with health insurance covered through November 30. No resumption date has been finalized.
