Monday, October 12, 2026 · City · GSM News

Raleigh is a city in Wake County, North Carolina. Central North Carolina was battered by severe storms on Sunday, October 11, as the National Weather Service office in Raleigh issued tornado warnings for hours starting around noon, covering Lee, Chatham, Wake, Durham and Franklin counties.

NWS records show multiple "confirmed tornado" alerts: at 12:06 p.m. a confirmed tornado was located 9 miles east of Pittsboro, moving northeast at 20 mph, threatening Cary, Apex and surrounding areas; at 1:19 p.m. another confirmed tornado was near Wake Forest, 9 miles northeast of Raleigh, moving toward Bunn. Radar repeatedly detected rotation in storms over Cary and RDU International Airport. A tornado watch for central North Carolina remained in effect until 5 p.m.

According to WRAL, at least five confirmed tornadoes struck central North Carolina on Sunday, with the NWS saying another three to six possible touchdowns await verification. Damage was reported in northeast Raleigh and Fayetteville, with several dozen buildings damaged or destroyed by at least four of the tornadoes. Duke Energy's outage map showed roughly 2,000 customers without power after the storms, mostly in Vance and Cumberland counties. No injuries had been reported as of publication.

The severe weather was tied to the northward-moving remnants of Hurricane Isaias. NWS survey teams are in the field today continuing to assess suspected touchdown sites.
