Newsom Signs SB 907 Strengthening California DUI Laws, Including 'Braun's Law'

Tuesday, October 13, 2026 · California · GSM News

SACRAMENTO — California Gov. Gavin Newsom on October 12 signed Senate Bill 907, authored by state Sen. Bob Archuleta (D-Pico Rivera), as part of a package of measures strengthening California's laws against impaired driving and increasing accountability for repeat DUI offenders. The law takes effect on January 1, 2027.

SB 907 includes "Braun's Law," named in memory of Braun Levi, an 18-year-old Loyola High School student and nationally ranked tennis player who was struck and killed in May 2025 by a suspected repeat drunk driver while walking in Manhattan Beach. Braun's Law helps ensure that individuals whose DUI charges are reduced to lesser offenses are formally warned that impaired driving is dangerous to human life and that a subsequent offense resulting in death could expose them to more serious criminal charges, including murder.

For Archuleta, the legislation is personal: his granddaughter, Samantha Alex Robles Haun, was killed by a repeat drunk driver in December 2024. Archuleta also recognized Jennifer Levi, Braun's mother, whose advocacy was instrumental in advancing Braun's Law, and thanked Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman, Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) for their roles in the bill's passage.

Archuleta said that throughout his work on SB 907 he met mothers, fathers, spouses and children whose lives were forever changed because someone chose to drive impaired, and that the law belongs to those families as well. He thanked Newsom for signing the bill and standing with victims, families, law enforcement, prosecutors and advocates, saying driving under the influence is preventable and that repeat impaired driving carries serious consequences under California law.
