Six Charlotte Officers Face Termination Over Racist Text Messages

Tuesday, October 13, 2026 · City · GSM News

Charlotte is a city in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department confirmed on October 12 that six patrol officers face termination after investigators found they had sent racist text messages, including slurs targeting Black people; the case has been referred to the city's Civil Service Board for a decision. The messages surfaced during the investigation of former officer Seth Elliott, who was accused in July of using the Flock license-plate recognition system to track another person and was later charged with illegally accessing a government computer for purposes unrelated to law enforcement.

The department said the six officers have been recommended for termination, but the discipline is not yet final; the Civil Service Board will hear the evidence and decide. In a statement, the department said it demands integrity and professionalism from its officers and will not tolerate conduct that undermines community trust; the chief has visited every unit within his first 100 days in office to reiterate ethics requirements and accountability standards. The case has put the department's internal oversight mechanisms under scrutiny, and the board's final ruling is being closely watched.
