First U.S. National High School Esports Championship Tips Off Oct. 12; Title Game Set for Dec. 11

NEW YORK — The first USA TODAY Sports National High School Esports Championship began tournament play on Monday, Oct. 12, USA TODAY Sports and PlayVS, North America's leading scholastic and collegiate gaming platform, announced on Oct. 7 via BusinessWire. Eight of the nation's top high school esports teams will compete in a round-robin tournament across three games on the PlayVS platform: EA Sports Madden NFL, Marvel Rivals and Rocket League.
Qualifying schools were evaluated on criteria including game-winning percentages in the three titles and the number of graduating seniors, reviewed by PlayVS during the 2026 Spring esports season. Results across the three games will determine the standings, and the top two teams will meet in the National Championship on Friday, Dec. 11. The winner will be crowned the first-ever USA TODAY Sports National High School Esports Champion and will continue competing through the spring, taking on other top high school and collegiate challengers in the inaugural USA TODAY Sports Challenger Series.
The championship builds on the USA TODAY SUPER 25 Esports Rankings, launched by USA TODAY Sports and PlayVS in 2024 to recognize North America's top high school esports teams, and is part of USA TODAY Sports' expanding commitment to high school sports.
