Follow-Up: Hollywood Burbank Airport's $1.3 Billion New Terminal Opens Oct. 13 — 14 Gates, All-Electric, 1930 Terminal to Be Demolished

BURBANK, Oct. 13 — Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) opened its roughly $1.3 billion replacement passenger terminal to the public on Tuesday, Oct. 13, welcoming its first travelers. GSM reported on Oct. 12 that the new terminal was set to open today and the 1930 terminal would retire; today's opening is the latest step in the same project.
The new terminal covers 355,000 square feet — more than 100,000 square feet larger than the existing complex — and keeps the same 14 gates. Burbank voters approved Measure B in 2016, capping the replacement at 14 gates and 355,000 square feet, and the project broke ground in 2024. The building is all-electric, designed toward LEED Gold, with a single centralized security checkpoint of eight lanes and all baggage claim moved indoors; the airport's signature outdoor walk-to-plane boarding remains. Executive Director John Hatanaka said during a pre-opening tour that a longer airport loop road means traffic will no longer back up onto Hollywood Way.
The airport said in 2016 that the old terminal's proximity to the runways did not meet current Federal Aviation Administration standards, that its central section did not meet current seismic design standards, and that it lacked adequate space and basic amenities. The new terminal sits on the opposite side of the airfield, farther from the runways; the old terminal will be demolished and its site folded into the airfield.
Travelers flying from Burbank on or after Oct. 13 will find different check-in, security and parking layouts, and the airport advises allowing extra time during opening week and checking airline instructions. The airport serves millions of passengers a year as a Los Angeles County gateway for the northern San Fernando Valley and beyond.
