Pittsburgh Red-Light Cameras Begin Issuing Fines

Pittsburgh is a city in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Starting October 11, Pittsburgh drivers caught running red lights by traffic cameras will be fined, ending the previous 'warning period.' The city said three of the red-light cameras installed over the course of the year are now in operation; violation records are reviewed and confirmed by police before tickets are issued, and drivers who receive a ticket have 30 days to pay or appeal.
The three active locations are Saw Mill Run Boulevard at Woodruff Street, Penn Avenue at Dallas Avenue, and East General Robinson Street at Anderson Street. According to CBS Pittsburgh, the city plans to install the cameras at six intersections this year, with the remaining sites to come online in the coming months. Running a red light is not the only violation captured — failing to come to a complete stop before turning right is also recorded. The city's website stresses that these cameras only photograph vehicles that disobey traffic signals, and are not the same type of device as the Flock automated license-plate readers that have sparked privacy controversy nationwide.
