Corona Police Real-Time Information Center and Drones Help Resolve Three Cases: Ghost Gun, Shooting and Smoke-Shop Robbery Arrests

CORONA, Oct. 13 — The Corona Police Department in Riverside County recently disclosed that patrol officers, detectives, its Real Time Information Center (RTIC) and its Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) team worked together across three separate operations, arresting three armed suspects and recovering illegal firearms. All three suspects were taken to the county jail for booking on their respective felony charges. The RTIC's role — pulling camera feeds, launching drones and relaying information to officers in the field — was highlighted again in a city public-safety presentation on Oct. 12.
In the first case, a domestic dispute, officers responded to a report that a suspect had pointed a handgun at a family member and chased him from a home. Patrol officers, detectives and the Drone as First Responder unit set up containment around the residence; when the suspect came out, he was taken into custody without incident. A search warrant at the home then yielded a loaded 9mm unserialized 'ghost gun.'
In the second case, officers dispatched to the Rimpau Avenue area on a shooting report determined that a suspect had fired multiple rounds at two victims after an argument; no injuries were reported. Using Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology with help from the Targeted Enforcement Team (PACT), officers tracked and arrested the suspect and recovered the suspected firearm, which had a defaced serial number. Police confirmed the suspect also had an active Los Angeles County felony warrant for assault with a deadly weapon.
In the third case, a suspect stole vape pens from a local smoke shop, got into a physical altercation with an employee and fled by car. RTIC technicians used ALPR alerts and drone surveillance to locate the getaway vehicle, and patrol officers made a coordinated stop and arrested the suspect without incident.
