USDA Issues Public Health Alert for Illegally Imported Grace Chicken Vienna Sausages Sold in Five States

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert on October 6 for two varieties of canned Grace chicken Vienna sausages that were illegally imported from Jamaica, a country not eligible to export meat or poultry products to the United States. FSIS said it is investigating how the products entered the country. The importer distributed the cans to retail locations in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Maryland and Texas, Food Safety News and ConsumerAffairs reported.
The alert covers 140-gram cans of "Grace Ready to Eat Chicken Vienna Sausages" and "Grace Ready to Eat Chicken Vienna Sausages Hot & Spicy," regardless of product date. Both bear the establishment number "EST. NO G-01" inside the Jamaican inspection mark. The problem was discovered during routine FSIS surveillance of imported products in commerce.
FSIS said there have been no confirmed reports of illness or injury related to the products, but the agency is concerned some may remain in consumers' pantries. Consumers who bought the sausages are urged not to eat them; the products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
