Two Deputies and a Civilian Hospitalized After Patrol Car Collision in West Athens

MyNewsLA (City News Service) reported on October 13 that two Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies and a civilian were recovering in hospital on Tuesday, October 13, after a vehicle crash in West Athens.
An LASD spokesperson said the deputy's vehicle was travelling southbound on Vermont Avenue at about 11:53 p.m. on Monday, October 12, when it collided with a black hatchback travelling westbound on 120th Street. The deputy's vehicle then veered to the right and crashed into a fire hydrant at the southwest corner of the intersection. Two deputies and the driver of the hatchback were taken to hospital with minor injuries; the sheriff's department said the two deputies were expected to be discharged quickly, and no update was immediately available on the hatchback driver's condition. Both vehicles sustained major damage.
The deputy's vehicle came to rest on top of the fire hydrant, which spewed water onto the street and could not be shut off until the vehicle was removed. The crash also caused a power outage in the immediate area. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power said a 6-inch line was broken and 50 customers were affected, with crews on scene making repairs; no details were immediately available about the outage. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the collision, and the sheriff's department said no further details on the cause were immediately available.
