NASA's 35th Commercial Resupply Mission Lifts Off; Cargo Dragon Carrying 6,300 Pounds to Dock With Station on Oct. 15

NASA's 35th commercial resupply mission to the International Space Station lifted off at 6:33 a.m. EDT on Tuesday, October 13. A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, sending a cargo Dragon spacecraft to the orbiting laboratory with more than 6,300 pounds of supplies, hardware and scientific investigations.

Among the cargo, NASA said, is the final pair of International Space Station Roll-Out Solar Arrays (iROSA). Once installed, the arrays will complete the augmentation of the station's power system, boosting the electricity available for research and operations and supporting the station's eventual safe, controlled deorbit. Astronauts plan to install the arrays during a series of spacewalks later this fall.

Dragon is also delivering several new experiments, including hardware to manufacture artificial retinas in microgravity, which NASA says could help restore vision for patients on Earth; 3D heart tissue models to advance large-scale drug testing on future space missions; materials to study how a new type of glass forms in microgravity; and brain organoids that could reveal treatment targets for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and multiple sclerosis.

Dragon is scheduled to dock autonomously at 11 a.m. EDT (8 a.m. PDT) on Thursday, October 15, at the space-facing port of the station's Harmony module. NASA will stream rendezvous and docking coverage beginning at 9:15 a.m. EDT (6:15 a.m. PDT) across its platforms.

The spacecraft is scheduled to remain at the station until mid-November, when it will depart and return to Earth with time-critical research and cargo, splashing down off the coast of California.
