Follow-Up: Cargo Dragon Docks With Space Station, Delivering 6,300 Pounds of Supplies

A SpaceX cargo Dragon spacecraft docked autonomously with the International Space Station at 10:27 a.m. EDT (7:27 a.m. PDT) on Thursday, Oct. 15, connecting to the space-facing port of the Harmony module and completing the delivery flight of NASA's 35th commercial resupply mission (CRS-35), according to NASA. The docking came a few minutes ahead of the agency's revised target time.

As GSM reported earlier, the Dragon lifted off at 6:33 a.m. EDT on Oct. 13 aboard a Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida (see GSM's Oct. 14 launch report) and reached the station after about two days in orbit. The Expedition 75 crew aboard the station will now begin unloading the cargo.

Dragon delivered more than 6,300 pounds (about 2,860 kilograms) of food, supplies and equipment. The shipment's centerpiece is the final pair of International Space Station Roll-Out Solar Arrays (iROSA): once astronauts install them during a series of spacewalks later this fall, the station's power-system upgrade under way since 2021 will be complete. The cargo also includes hardware to manufacture artificial retinas in microgravity, 3D heart tissue models to advance large-scale drug testing, materials to study how a new type of glass forms in microgravity, and brain organoids aimed at finding treatment targets for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and multiple sclerosis.

NASA said the spacecraft will remain at the station until mid-November, then depart and return to Earth with time-critical research and cargo, splashing down off the coast of California.
