Riverside County Holds First Sheriff Oversight Listening Session on Oct. 13 in Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Oct. 13 — Riverside County's ad hoc committee studying oversight options for the Sheriff's Department held the first of three public listening sessions on Tuesday evening, October 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Board Hearing Room of the County Administrative Center at 4080 Lemon Street in Riverside, according to the county's announced schedule.
Two more sessions follow: Thursday, October 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Coachella Valley Water District's Steve Robbins Administration Building, 75515 Hovley Lane East in Palm Desert, and a virtual session on Monday, October 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. with English and Spanish livestreams. Residents wishing to speak were asked to fill out speaker cards in advance through the county clerk's website; written comments may also be submitted without appearing in person.
The sessions follow a June finding by the county's 19-member civil grand jury that additional oversight and system-wide reforms of the Sheriff's Department are warranted. Senate Bill 1379, signed by the governor last week, will require the county to split sheriff and coroner operations and establish an independent Office of Medical Examiner by the start of the next fiscal year. The committee will report its findings to the full Board of Supervisors by the end of January.
