San Diego City Council Considers Wage Theft Enforcement Amendments on Oct. 13

Wednesday, October 14, 2026 · California · GSM News

San Diego is a city in San Diego County, California. SAN DIEGO, Oct. 13 — The San Diego City Council considered amendments to the municipal code on Tuesday, October 13, addressing wage theft enforcement, according to a summary of the city's municipal proceedings. The proposed amendments would formally align the city's earned sick leave provisions with California state law and close a gap in the municipal code that currently lacks authorization for civil wage theft recovery.

The proposal follows a July 2026 U.S. Department of Labor intervention in San Diego in which deli employees were compensated after consistently working 11-hour days. The amendments would give the city its own civil recovery pathway for unpaid wages rather than relying solely on state or federal enforcement.

Separately, San Diego's minimum wage is scheduled to rise to $18.35 per hour on January 1, 2027. The council's October 13 item was a consideration step; final adoption and effective dates will follow the council's published proceedings.
