The U.S. Department of Justice announced in St. Louis, Missouri, on October 15 that Operation Show Me Justice, an eight-week law enforcement surge, has concluded. According to figures released by the department, the teams arrested 435 people, including 412 outstanding warrant arrests; one offender had seven outstanding warrants. The operation also seized 80 kilograms of drugs, 166 illegal firearms, six machine gun conversion devices and more than $1 million in cash.

The operation, which began in August, was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with the U.S. Marshals Service, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations and the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department taking part. It focused on drug, firearm and other violent crime in St. Louis.

Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter told reporters that most of those arrested had long been wanted and were still operating in their neighborhoods until their arrests. "Violence is not inevitable," he said, urging mayors, city councils, governors and police chiefs across the country to contact federal authorities about carrying out similar joint operations in their jurisdictions.

Also attending the briefing were U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt, ATF Director Robert Cekada, U.S. Marshals Service Director Gadyaces Serralta, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Chief Robert J. Tracy and Thomas C. Albus, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri.

The operation was a Justice Department violent-crime enforcement effort in St. Louis and is separate from immigration enforcement operations conducted in other cities during the same period.
