Follow-Up: Apple Closes Above a $5 Trillion Market Value for the First Time, Becoming the Second Company After Nvidia to Do So

NEW YORK — Apple shares rose 0.5% on Wednesday, October 14, to close at $342.96, giving the company a market value of $5.005 trillion — the first time Apple has closed above $5 trillion. According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple had crossed the $5 trillion mark intraday six times before but had never held it to the close; Wednesday was its seventh intraday crossing and its first close above the level. Apple becomes the second company to close above $5 trillion, after Nvidia, which remains the largest at about $5.33 trillion.
Apple shares traded as high as $347.07 during the session, close to their record high of $348.15. The milestone came on a weak day for technology stocks: the Nasdaq Composite fell nearly 1.9%, and Oracle, Meta, Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon and Alphabet all finished lower, while Apple ended in positive territory.
The close comes about six weeks after John Ternus took over as chief executive from Tim Cook on September 1. It also came a day after Apple's October 13 launch in New York of the HomeView smart-home display, a new Apple TV 4K and the HomePod mini 2, which GSM has covered, and two days before pre-orders open on October 16 for the foldable iPhone Duo. Apple is scheduled to report its fiscal fourth-quarter results on November 2.
