Thousands of Supermarket Fridges Hacked Across France, Major Chains Hit

PARIS — Refrigeration units at major supermarket groups across France were hacked in a cyberattack reported on October 14 by CNN and Reuters. Attackers exploited a vulnerability that allowed them to remotely change temperature settings for fridges running the affected software, using the units' built-in defrost function and removing limits that would usually prevent temperatures from rising, causing the refrigerators to thaw overnight. Display cabinets peaked at 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit) for around six hours overnight, with some even catching fire, according to UK Cyber Defence, a security analysis firm.
As many as 80 supermarkets belonging to Carrefour were impacted, as were 5 percent of Monoprix's 490 stores. Retail group Les Mousquetaires reported that fridges at 150 shops had been targeted, and about 80 Coopérative U stores were also affected, its CEO Dominique Schelcher said. Retail executives warned the cost of the damage could run into the millions. Staff were photographed filling boxes of spoiled goods outside an Intermarché supermarket in Paris.
Security researcher Munro said it was not hard to take control of the fridges and that unit management at these retailers was likely outsourced to a third party. The issue does not appear contained within France: Spain, Portugal, Poland, Germany and Belgium were also affected by the attack, according to reporting citing Aimé of the response effort via Reuters.
