PALM DESERT — A person was found dead at The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens in Palm Desert on October 14. According to the Desert Sun, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department said deputies responded at 9:05 a.m. Wednesday to a report of an industrial accident in the 47,000 block of Portola Avenue. Arriving deputies met paramedics at the scene, who pronounced the individual dead.

The sheriff's department said the person was an outside contractor, that there were no signs of foul play, and that how the person died remained unclear. The investigation was ongoing, and the department did not release the person's name or further details.

A zoo spokesperson said in a statement that there had been a 911 response that morning to a behind-the-scenes area of The Living Desert involving an outside contractor who was found deceased. The statement said the incident did not involve guests and was unrelated to the zoo's animals, animal care operations or its Lions Ridge development project.

The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, on Portola Avenue in Palm Desert, is a major zoo and botanical garden attraction in the Coachella Valley. Further information is expected from the sheriff's department as the investigation continues.
