High Wind Warning and Coastal Heat Advisory for San Diego County; Gusts to 65 mph in Mountains, Cool Zones Open

Thursday, October 15, 2026 · California · GSM News

SAN DIEGO — San Diego County officials said on the afternoon of October 14 that the National Weather Service (NWS) office in San Diego had issued a high wind warning for the county's inland, mountain and foothill areas and a heat advisory for coastal areas, taking effect Thursday, October 15. According to the County News Center, the high wind warning begins Thursday morning and ends Saturday evening, and forecasters said gusty conditions could continue in inland areas into Saturday night.

NWS text put the San Diego County Mountains under a high wind warning from 6 a.m. Thursday to midnight Saturday night, with northeast to east winds of 25 to 35 mph and gusts of 50 to 65 mph, strongest on the mountain foothills and peaking on Friday; the Santa Ana Mountains and Foothills warning runs to noon Saturday. The Weather Service said damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines, widespread power outages were expected, and travel would be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.

The county said hot, dry and windy conditions often overlap with Red Flag Warnings, increasing the risk of fast-moving wildfires, and that high winds may also cause blowing dust and downed trees. Thirty-three branch libraries and community centers will serve as Cool Zones for residents seeking relief from the heat. County guidance included securing outdoor items such as patio furniture, umbrellas and trash bins, watching for and reporting downed power lines, keeping an emergency go-kit ready with phones and medical devices charged, and monitoring alerts through AlertSanDiego.
