Grand Canyon North Rim Shifts to Fall Operations on Oct. 15: Two Scenic Roads Close Until Nov. 3, North Kaibab Trail Still Shut

Thursday, October 15, 2026 · Culture & Travel · GSM News

The National Park Service says the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona moves to modified fall operations starting October 15. The roads to two of its best-known overlooks, Cape Royal and Point Imperial, will close temporarily from sunset on October 15 through sunrise on November 3, 2026, so crews can carry out critical road repair and rehabilitation work in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration. The park says the closure is needed to give work crews a safe environment and to protect visitors.

Visitor services on the North Rim are scaling back at the same time. The North Rim Backcountry Information Center closed for the season at noon on October 15; the General Store, operated by Aramark, closed for the season at 4 p.m. that day, and the North Rim Campground closed on the morning of October 16. The park gas station already ended its season on September 19, and no fuel is available inside the North Rim area, so visitors must arrive with a full tank. Backcountry recreation remains available, with permits still issued through the South Rim Backcountry Information Center and Recreation.gov.

On the trails, the North Kaibab Trail remains closed in its entirety after an August 29 flash flood caused extensive damage to the trail, bridges and other infrastructure in Bright Angel Canyon. Superintendent Ed Keable said visitors should plan ahead, monitor changing conditions and travel self-sufficiently during the fall transition, carrying adequate food, water, fuel and emergency supplies, and using extra caution as winter weather arrives at the high-elevation North Rim.
