Newsom: 120 New CHP Officers Sworn In, More Than 3,200 Since 2019

Governor Gavin Newsom's office announced on Oct. 16 that 120 cadets graduated from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Academy in West Sacramento and were sworn in as officers — the Academy's final graduating class of the year. With this class, the CHP has sworn in 382 officers in 2026, bringing the total sworn in since 2019 to more than 3,200.

The governor's office said the cadets completed a 26-week program totaling about 1,275 hours of academic, tactical and scenario-based instruction, exceeding state training standards. The graduates will report to the CHP's 101 Area offices across the state to begin a field training program alongside experienced officers. Two cadet classes remain at the Academy and are scheduled to graduate in 2027. The West Sacramento Academy marked its 50th anniversary this year.

"The badge represents the trust the people of California place in these officers. Throughout their careers, they must earn that trust every day through integrity, professionalism and service," CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said. The governor's office said the state will keep growing the CHP through recruitment and investment to keep communities across California safe.
