Social Security Benefits to Rise 3.6% in 2027, SSA Announces

The Social Security Administration announced on October 14 that Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments will rise 3.6% in 2027 under the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), up from 2.8% in 2026 and the largest increase since 2023's 8.7%.
The average retired worker's monthly benefit is estimated to rise from about $2,095 to about $2,170, roughly $75 more per month. Nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries will see the increase beginning with January 2027 benefits, while increased SSI payments for about 7.3 million recipients begin December 31, 2026.
The adjustment is based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics' CPI-W, comparing third-quarter 2026 with third-quarter 2025. The maximum amount of earnings subject to Social Security tax will rise to $192,300 in 2027, from $184,500 in 2026.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the same day that the Consumer Price Index rose 3.7 percent in September from a year earlier. Myechia Minter-Jordan, chief executive officer of AARP, said in a statement that the cost-of-living adjustment is critical for older Americans, helping millions keep up with rising costs for groceries, everyday bills and health care.
