Social Security Announces 3.6% Benefit Increase for 2027, Averaging About $75 More Per Month for Retirees

Saturday, October 17, 2026 · Life · GSM News

The Social Security Administration announced on October 14 that Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments will rise 3.6 percent in 2027 under the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), covering 76 million Americans. The increase begins with January 2027 benefits for nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries, while increased SSI payments to about 7.3 million people begin December 31, 2026. On average, retirement benefits will increase by about $75 per month. SSA fact-sheet estimates for 2027 include average monthly benefits of $2,170 for all retired workers (up from $2,095), $3,355 for an aged couple both receiving benefits, and $1,701 for all disabled workers. The COLA is set by law from the Labor Department's Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), which rose 3.4 percent year over year in July 2026, 3.5 percent in August and 3.9 percent in September. It is the largest annual increase since 2023's 8.7 percent, above the 2.8 percent set for 2026. 'Social Security will implement this cost-of-living adjustment for 76 million Americans, giving them greater financial stability,' said Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano. Beneficiaries with a personal my Social Security account can view their COLA notice online starting in late November — up to three weeks before mailed notices, which arrive during December; paperless viewing requires creating an account and opting in by November 18. Medicare Part B premium amounts for 2027 have not yet been announced; because those premiums are usually deducted directly from Social Security checks, the net increase beneficiaries actually receive will depend on the final premium.
