Classified Election-Threat Briefing for State Officials Scrapped After Video Failure, CNN Reports

Friday, October 16, 2026 · Federal · GSM News

A classified election-threat briefing that the FBI and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) had scheduled for state election officials and secretaries of state on Thursday, October 15, was canceled after its video connection failed about 15 to 30 minutes into the session, CNN reported on October 15. The cancellation came with less than three weeks left before the November election day.

Such briefings are typically held twice — once in the summer and once in the weeks before the election — CNN reported. This year's first session, held in the summer, covered the election threat picture as of that time; the October 15 session was to be the final routine classified briefing before the vote. It was not clear which side caused the technical failure.

The agenda was to have covered foreign interference attempts, cyberattacks and physical threats against election officials, CNN reported, adding that the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), part of the Department of Homeland Security, also took part.

The cancellation notice gave no indication whether the briefing would be rescheduled, CNN reported. The FBI, ODNI and CISA did not respond to CNN's requests for comment.
