FBI and CISA Warn of Phishing Attacks Targeting Election Officials

Friday, October 16, 2026 · Federal · GSM News

WASHINGTON — The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has issued a public service announcement (No. I-101626-PSA) warning election officials about targeted phishing attacks in which attackers impersonate election vendors or colleagues to steal email account credentials.

According to the announcement, the phishing messages often use look-alike domains differing from real ones by only a few characters, and carry QR codes or shortened links designed to evade standard detection, with the aim of stealing credentials for accounts such as Microsoft 365. The FBI advises election workers to verify messages that ask for logins or credentials and to report suspicious messages through the channels listed in the announcement. The Federal Trade Commission issued its own election-scam advisory (PSA13) on October 16, the same day.
