San Bernardino County Advances Route 66 Bridge Replacements Across 130-Mile Desert Corridor

Friday, October 16, 2026 · California · GSM News

San Bernardino County's Department of Public Works has released the latest status of its Route 66 (National Trails Highway) bridge replacement program: the roughly 130-mile corridor holds 133 bridge structures, most built in 1929–1930, and 63 are now active county projects, with two already repaired.

Department spokesperson Amy Ledbetter said design for 19 bridges between Cadiz and Essex is about 35 percent complete, with environmental clearance expected in spring 2028, final design later that year and construction in 2029. For Bridge 85 near Cadiz Road, environmental permits are expected by the end of 2026 and construction in 2027. The aging timber bridges are being replaced with concrete structures as funding becomes available, and the county is pursuing state and federal grants. Flash flooding in September 2014 destroyed or damaged dozens of the corridor's timber bridges.

The desert corridor east of Amboy is a key link toward Twentynine Palms, the Mojave National Preserve and Las Vegas. The county posts progress updates for each bridge on its Public Works website.
