Early-Morning Fire Sweeps East Hollywood Apartment Building in Los Angeles: Nearly 180 Firefighters Respond, 60 Units Ruled Uninhabitable and 90 Residents Displaced

Los Angeles — Los Angeles is a city in Los Angeles County, California. A fire that broke out in the basement of a three-story apartment building in East Hollywood spread through the walls to multiple floors and the roof in the early hours of October 15, the Los Angeles Fire Department said. Firefighters were dispatched at 4:24 a.m. to 560 North Kingsley Drive, and the first units arrived within five minutes to attack the fire and assess the risk to residents.
The building was constructed in 1924. About 45 minutes into the incident, smoke conditions forced the evacuation of first-floor residents, and flames from below later compromised portions of the first floor as crews fought the fire in several areas of the structure. Additional resources were requested repeatedly; by the time knockdown was declared at 7:19 a.m., approximately 180 firefighters were working at the scene.
Early in the incident, one adult woman was taken to a local hospital in stable condition, and no other injuries were reported. A structural assessment by the city's Department of Building and Safety deemed 60 units uninhabitable, leaving 90 residents displaced. The Los Angeles Police Department and the city's Emergency Management Department assisted with the evacuation, Metro buses provided transportation, the Department of Recreation and Parks opened a temporary shelter, and the American Red Cross is providing longer-term housing assistance. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Fire Department's Arson Section.
