California State Parks announced on October 9, 2026, that Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, in the Big Sur area of Monterey County, would reopen to the public on Friday, October 16, following an extended closure associated with the Timber Fire, according to the California State Parks Monterey District announcement.

Areas reopening beginning October 16 are the day-use areas, the campground, the Buzzards Roost Trail, the River Path, the Nature Trail, the Redwood Grove Boardwalk, the Campfire Center and the Big Sur Lodge.

Six trails remain closed until further notice to allow continued assessment and recovery work in burned areas: the Pfeiffer Falls Trail, the Valley View Trail, the Oak Grove Trail, the Mt. Manuel Trail, the Big Sur River Gorge Trail and the Pine Ridge Trail. All backcountry trails east of Highway 1 in Andrew Molera State Park and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park also remain closed indefinitely because of ongoing repair work, the district said.
