Trump Says U.S. Is Talking With Russia and China About Denuclearization

Washington — President Donald Trump said on October 15 that the United States is holding talks with Russia and China aimed at denuclearizing the countries with the biggest stockpiles of nuclear weapons, according to Reuters. Trump told Newsmax he had spoken with Chinese President Xi Jinping about denuclearization.
In the interview, Trump said he expects China to catch up with the United States on nuclear forces within the next five years, and said he would love to denuclearize if possible, adding that Washington is talking to both Moscow and Beijing about it.
Russia holds the largest number of stored nuclear warheads, followed by the United States and China, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute; the United States outpaces Russia in deployed warheads.
Trump's comments came months after the New START treaty expired earlier this year. Signed in 2010, the treaty allowed a single extension, which Presidents Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin agreed for five years. Any further extension would require an executive decision to voluntarily maintain the treaty's limits.
