Inmate With Improvised Weapons Injures Four Officers at Stockton Prison Medical Facility; CDCR Investigating Attempted Homicide
STOCKTON — The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) said on October 15 that it is investigating the attempted homicide of peace officers at California Health Care Facility (CHCF) in Stockton. At 9:36 p.m. on October 15, while four officers were conducting a wellness check on an unresponsive incarcerated person and attempting to enter a restricted housing unit cell, Joadanus Olivas, 39, attempted to exit the cell with two improvised weapons. Officers got Olivas back into his cell and restrained him. Four officers were injured during the incident, treated at an outside medical facility and subsequently released.
Olivas was transported to an outside medical facility for treatment of his injuries and has been transferred to another CDCR institution, where he remains on restricted housing status, CDCR said. The case will be referred to the San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office for possible felony charges, and CDCR's Office of the Inspector General has been notified.
Olivas was received from Los Angeles County on October 28, 2010. He was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole for second-degree attempted murder and received 583 days of pre-sentence credit for time served while awaiting sentencing, according to CDCR.
CHCF, which opened in 2013, provides medical and mental health care to incarcerated people with the most severe and long-term needs, including inpatient and outpatient mental health treatment, a diagnostic center, a dental clinic, a dialysis unit, and services for inmate-patients needing or recovering from surgery, as well as a palliative care unit and a memory care unit for patients with dementia. The Stockton facility currently houses 2,455 incarcerated people and employs approximately 3,500 staff. (GSM, based on the CDCR news release)
