Follow-Up: FDA Updates Cheddar Recall — Serotypes Corrected to O26:H11 and O45:H2, Distribution Expanded to Seven States

Saturday, October 17, 2026 · Health · GSM News

An updated company announcement posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration corrects two key details in the Family Farmstead Dairy raw cheddar recall: the contaminating strains are Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O26:H11 and O45:H2 (the original notice cited O157:H7), and distribution is broader than first reported — grocers in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia and Massachusetts, with possible further distribution through downstream distributors. The update was issued October 16. The recalled product is Family Farmstead Dairy Raw Mild Cheddar Cheese in 8-ounce clear plastic packages, lot code and best-by date 7/22/27; no other company products are included. The recall followed a Maryland laboratory's isolation of two STEC strains from two samples of Family Farmstead A2 Raw Cheddar under the FDA's Laboratory Flexible Funding Model sampling program. No illnesses have been reported. The company notes the strains can cause diarrheal illness, often with bloody stools, and in some cases hemolytic uremic syndrome, a form of kidney failure most likely in young children and the elderly. Consumers should discard the product or return it for a full refund; questions: (607) 397-4044, Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. ET. (GSM, via FDA company announcement)
