FDA Posts Recall: New York Dairy Recalls a Lot of Raw Mild Cheddar Over Possible E. coli O157:H7, Sold to Grocers in NY and NJ

WORCESTER, N.Y. — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on October 15 posted a recall announcement from Family Farmstead Dairy, LLC: a lot of the Worcester, New York company's Raw Mild Cheddar Cheese may be contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O157:H7, and the company has begun a recall.

The affected product is Family Farmstead brand raw mild cheddar cheese, lot code 7/22/27, with a best-by date of July 22, 2027, packaged in clear plastic with green, red and white labeling on the front and back. The lot was distributed to grocery stores in New York and New Jersey. The company said no other Family Farmstead Dairy products are included in the recall.

According to the announcement, the recall followed sampling by a Maryland laboratory program, which found two strains of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli in two samples of the company's 8-ounce A2 raw cheddar bearing the same date as the recalled lot. As of the announcement, the company had received no reports of illness linked to the product.

The announcement says E. coli O157:H7 can cause diarrheal illness, often with bloody stools. Most healthy adults recover within a week, but some people can develop hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a form of kidney failure most likely to occur in young children and the elderly, which can lead to serious kidney damage and death.

The company said consumers who bought the recalled lot should not eat the cheese and may return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Questions can be directed to the company at (607) 397-4044.
