Columbus Zoo Seeks Nearly $1 Million From City for Sewer Repairs

Columbus is a city in Franklin County, Ohio. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has requested nearly $1 million from the city of Columbus to support planning, design and improvements to its aging sewer system, the Columbus Dispatch reported on October 16.
Zoo spokesperson Nicolle Gomez Racey said the zoo's sewer force main, first installed in 1983, moves wastewater from the zoo to the public system. The entire project is expected to cost more than $10 million, with a firmer figure at the end of the design process. She said the zoo has invested substantially in maintaining the infrastructure and is now planning the next generation of utility assets. The zoo is not planning to seek funding from Franklin County, and the project is not related to its planned $175 million aquarium project and hotel expansion.
Mayor Andrew Ginther's 2026 capital budget proposal, first presented September 11, includes $950,000 for the project. The City Council will hold a hearing on October 19 to begin discussing the capital budget and is expected to vote on the entire $2.8 billion plan later this year.
