Detroit's Greektown Celebrates Completion of $20 Million Monroe Streetscape Project

Detroit is a city in Wayne County, Michigan. Detroit's Greektown Neighborhood Partnership held a celebration on Wednesday, October 14, marking the completion of the multiyear, $20 million Monroe Streetscape Project, local media reported on October 16, with community members and officials breaking plates to christen the finished district.
Work on the project started in 2025. Crews rebuilt Monroe Street in the historic Greektown neighborhood to be easier to walk: wider pedestrian space, curb-less lanes, room for outdoor dining, car-free sections paved with about $2.4 million in granite, 50 new trees, 50 smart lampposts with security cameras, a speaker system and a stormwater drain. Free Wi-Fi provided by Cronus Internet covers the whole district.
The district's 124 internet-connected security cameras feed into the Detroit Police Department's Real Time Crime Center, making this Detroit's first smart street. 'It's a part of the culture of our city, and to be here to elevate this area to its next chapter is truly an honor,' Mayor Mary Sheffield told the crowd. State Representatives Will Snyder and Joe Tate, who backed the state funding behind the project, also spoke. Construction was hard on local businesses, which saw sales fall 40 to 50 percent during the work; Tasso Teftsis, vice president of the Greektown Neighborhood Partnership and owner of Astoria Pastry Shop, estimated business has risen 10 to 15 percent since the street began reopening.
