New Orleans Council Raises Short-Term Rental Nightly Fee to $20

New Orleans is a city in Orleans Parish, Louisiana. The New Orleans City Council adopted an ordinance on October 16 raising the nightly fee on short-term rentals from $12 to $20, for both commercial and noncommercial rentals. City planning and finance staff told the council the new rate more accurately reflects the cost of city services associated with short-term rental guests.
Staff estimated the increase could generate about $3 million to $4 million in additional revenue for the city. Short-term rentals are a significant part of New Orleans' visitor economy, and their fees and regulation have long been debated by the council, balancing visitor spending, neighborhood quality of life and the cost of city services.
Also on October 16, the mayor's office presented the Canal Street Renaissance Initiative to the council, which approved a motion directing the City Planning Commission to hold public hearings on zoning and land-use changes to activate the corridor, including tools for outdoor seating, temporary uses, entertainment and signage regulation.
